Eco Score
Rate your lifestyle across transportation, diet, home energy, and consumption habits. Scores range from 0 (maximum impact) to 100 (carbon neutral). Globally, only 27% of consumers actively track their environmental impact. Getting a baseline score is the first step toward meaningful reduction.

Sustainable Shopping
The fashion industry produces 10% of global carbon emissions and is the second-largest consumer of water worldwide. Switch to sustainable brands, buy secondhand, and choose products with minimal packaging. Every purchase decision is a vote for the planet you want to live on.

Energy Savings
Heating and cooling account for nearly half of residential energy costs. Simple upgrades like LED bulbs save 75% energy per bulb. Proper insulation can reduce heating bills by 20-30%. Our estimator factors in your home size, current bill, and insulation quality to project annual savings.

Waste Reduction
Americans generate 4.9 pounds of waste per person per day, but only 32% gets recycled or composted. Food waste alone accounts for 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Composting, buying in bulk, and eliminating single-use plastics can cut your household waste by over 60%.

Green Travel
Aviation accounts for 2.5% of global CO2 emissions, but a single transatlantic flight generates about 1.6 tons of CO2 per passenger. Choose direct flights (takeoff uses the most fuel), offset your miles, take trains when possible, and pick eco-certified hotels that reduce water and energy use.

๐ฑ Quick Eco Tips
๐ก
Switch to LED BulbsLED bulbs use 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs and last 25 times longer. Replacing 5 bulbs saves about $75 per year on electricity. The average home has 40 light sockets, so a full switch saves over $600 annually.
๐ฒ
Bike or Walk Short Trips40% of all car trips in the US are under 2 miles. Walking or biking those trips eliminates roughly 1,600 pounds of CO2 per year. It also saves $2,000-$3,000 annually on gas, maintenance, and parking costs.
๐ฅ
Reduce Meat ConsumptionProducing 1 pound of beef requires 1,800 gallons of water and generates 27 kg of CO2 equivalent. Cutting meat intake to 3 days per week reduces your food-related carbon footprint by 30% and saves an average of $23 per week on groceries.
๐ก๏ธ
Adjust Your ThermostatLowering your thermostat by 2 degrees in winter and raising it 2 degrees in summer saves up to 10% on heating and cooling bills. A programmable thermostat saves an additional $180 per year by automatically adjusting when you are asleep or away.
๐
Bring Reusable BagsThe US uses 100 billion plastic bags per year, requiring 12 million barrels of oil to manufacture. Each reusable bag replaces about 700 disposable bags over its lifetime. Five reusable bags are enough for most grocery trips.
๐ฟ
Take Shorter ShowersA standard showerhead uses 2.5 gallons per minute. Cutting your shower from 10 minutes to 5 minutes saves 4,562 gallons per year per person. Installing a low-flow showerhead (1.5 GPM) saves an additional 40% without noticeable pressure loss.
A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases (measured in CO2 equivalents) produced directly and indirectly by an individual, organization, event, or product. The average American's carbon footprint is about 16 metric tons of CO2 per year, which is nearly four times the global average of 4.7 tons. Your footprint comes from driving, flying, heating and cooling your home, the food you eat, and the products you buy.
How accurate is the carbon calculator?▼
Our carbon calculator uses emission factors from the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and EIA (Energy Information Administration). Driving emissions are calculated at 0.411 kg CO2 per mile (based on average passenger vehicle), flight emissions at 0.255 kg CO2 per passenger-mile, electricity at 0.855 lbs CO2 per kWh (national grid average), and natural gas at 11.7 lbs CO2 per therm. These are nationally averaged figures. Your actual emissions may vary based on vehicle fuel efficiency, airline, and local utility energy mix.
What are the easiest ways to reduce my carbon footprint?▼
The highest-impact changes are: (1) reduce driving by carpooling, biking, or using public transit, which can cut transport emissions by 50-80%; (2) switch to renewable energy or a green power plan, eliminating up to 7,000 lbs CO2 per year; (3) eat less meat, especially beef, saving 1,500+ lbs CO2 annually; (4) improve home insulation and use a smart thermostat, cutting heating/cooling emissions by 20-30%; and (5) fly less or choose direct flights, as takeoff and landing use the most fuel.
How much water does the average household use?▼
The average American household uses approximately 300 gallons of water per day, or about 82 gallons per person. Toilets account for 24% of indoor water use (1.6 gallons per flush), followed by showers at 20% (2.5 gallons per minute), faucets at 19%, and clothes washers at 17%. Outdoor irrigation adds an average of 100 gallons per day during summer months. Low-flow fixtures, shorter showers, and fixing leaks can reduce usage by 30-50%.
Do carbon offsets actually work?▼
Carbon offsets can be effective when purchased from verified, reputable programs. Look for certifications like Gold Standard, Verified Carbon Standard (Verra), or Climate Action Reserve. These programs fund projects such as reforestation, methane capture, and renewable energy development. However, offsets should be treated as a supplement to direct emission reductions, not a replacement. The most credible offsets have additionality (the project would not have happened without offset funding) and permanence (the carbon stays sequestered). Prices range from $5 to $50 per ton of CO2.
How can I save money while going green?▼
Going green often saves money. LED bulbs save $75+/year, a programmable thermostat saves $180/year, line-drying clothes saves $200/year, reducing meat consumption saves $1,200/year, biking short trips saves $2,000+/year on gas and maintenance, and canceling single-use product subscriptions saves $300+/year. Home insulation upgrades typically pay for themselves within 2-3 years. Solar panels have a 6-8 year payback period and produce free electricity for 25+ years after that.
What is the most polluting industry?▼
Energy production (electricity and heat) is the largest source of global greenhouse gas emissions at 25%, followed by agriculture, forestry, and land use at 24%, industry at 21%, transportation at 16%, and buildings at 6%. Within transportation, road vehicles account for 75% of emissions. The fashion industry alone produces 10% of global carbon emissions, more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined. Data centers and digital infrastructure now account for approximately 2% of global emissions and are growing rapidly.
Is my data stored when I use these calculators?▼
